The Shanghai Museum of Glass is a contemporary concept museum located in a former
glassmaking-workshop in the north of Shanghai. On more than 3,500 sqm the museum unfolds
the thousand years old story of ancient glassmaking to present day applications for astronautics.
Leading an international team of architects, artists, designers, filmmakers and multimedia
specialists, COORDINATION ASIA was responsible for art direction and the entire concept, design
and supervision of the museum interior, as well as to be a reliable consultant for curation,
marketing and operation.

The museum opened it's doors in May 2011 after 18 monthes of planning and construction.

The museum itself (interior/exhibition/galleries) was concepted, designed and supervised by
COORDINATION ASIA. COO ASIA is a Shanghai-based design consultancy specialized in
museums and retail design under the direction of the german architect Tilman Thuermer. For the
graphic design COO cooperated with Jacquesetbrigitte an illustrator couple from Switzerland,
based in Berlin.

The exterior was taken care of the Shanghai-based german architectural firm Logon.
COO ASIA soley used black laqueres glass for the exhibition interior (cases, floor furniture, walls),
but left the existing structure of the building untouched. Since the museum is located in a former
glassmaking workshop and the designers tried to protect the old structures (open workshop
ceiling, rough floor and walls) to keep the former function visible. The black sleek walls and cases
reflect the multiple LEDs and multimedia and create a certain sparkle within the space. The
reflections are a kind of link which shows the interdependecies and influences between the
periods of glass design and glass making over the centuries and inbetween continents and
cultures.

A successful museum design must balance between the space, the exhibition furniture and the
exhibits along with the visual impact of graphical and media support. The Shanghai Museum of
Glass is the largest exhibit of it's collection, it literally melts the space with it's objects. Art Director
Tilman Thuermer about the concept: " Museums in China are often just  accumulations of
showcases where the visitors hop from case to case but somehow kept out and are not beeing
involved. No spacial experience. No chance to collect knowledge according to personal interests.
Just following beaten tracks. We tried to break this up and created a (glass-like)-kaleidoscope of
impressions and points-of-interest for the visitor to encourage them to be active and
independend.".
